Google Replaces ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ Button With AI Mode for Some Users

Google is shifting gears on its homepage, giving its iconic “I’m Feeling Lucky” button less visibility in favor of a new AI-driven experience.

The tech giant recently broadened the rollout of AI Mode, a feature that enhances search with more conversational, AI-generated responses. As highlighted by Search Engine Roundtable, this experimental tool has now made its way to Google.com, occasionally taking the spot traditionally occupied by the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.

On social media platform X, users have noted seeing the AI Mode button appear to the right of the search bar—while in some cases, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button remains below. At PCMag, personal Google accounts with AI Mode turned on are seeing the AI feature fully replace the classic button.

AI Mode is an evolution of AI Overviews, introduced in 2023. While Overviews provide brief summaries, AI Mode delivers in-depth responses to user queries on a dedicated results page. You can access it by either clicking the AI Mode button from the search page or by visiting google.com/aimode directly.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that this homepage integration is “just one of many experiments” the company is currently running.

What About “I’m Feeling Lucky”?

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” feature has long been a quirky part of Google’s identity, instantly redirecting users to the top search result without showing any other links. However, it’s unclear how frequently the feature is still used. A 2007 estimate from Google suggested only about 1% of searches employed the button—a number likely even lower today as most users start searches through the browser address bar rather than Google.com.

A Visual Refresh, Too

Another recent change includes a subtle redesign of Google’s familiar “G” logo. The update now blends the company’s four signature colors into a more fluid, gradient-style design, moving away from the traditional block pattern. This refreshed look is also reflected in the visual styling around the AI Mode button.

As Google continues pushing AI integration across its services, these homepage changes reflect a broader evolution in how the company wants users to interact with its tools.
