New MacBook Air Review

If you’ve been struggling to decide between the newly released M2-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, then some information has come to light. The new MacBook Air appears to throttle its own performance by up to 25% during prolonged workloads. Conducted core testing to more accurately reflect how the device would handle longer and demanding tasks rather than using a benchmarking application such as Cinebench R23. These benchmarks are useful, but due to their short duration, they cannot accurately reflect real-world performance.

The fanless design is likely the culprit, with the machine being forced to throttle its own performance to reduce the risk of overheating. Also worth noting that the M2-powered MacBook Pro 13-inch during the  tests has encountered the performance issues as it has a single fan to lower temperatures. Under load  the M2 MacBook Air has slower SSD speeds which will likely attempt to keep manufacturing costs down but combined with the performance loss should this drive home that while the Air and Pro contain the same chip, they are different for a reason. If you need to run applications longer, e.g.   editing and rendering video footage, you’d better buy the MacBook Pro 13 inch (M2, 2022) or even the larger 14 inch or 16 inch M1 Pro and M1 Max models.

The original Price of $999 is down to $799, and given that the new M2 MacBook Air starts at $1,199 / $1,249  , it’s still a solid buy for the Price. As previously mentioned, if you need more power, reach for the older MacBook Pro models, or wait until they get their own inevitable M2 Pro and M2 Max refresh. The new MacBook Air should only appeal to those who want a redesigned look, need a little more performance than the original M1 Air
