Queen Elizabeth II Dies at 96
Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth, died on 8th September 2022 at the age of 96. The queen was under medical care in Scotland, where she died, surrounded by members of the Royal Family.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said the Queen died “peacefully” this afternoon at Balmoral Palace.
Earlier on Thursday, a medical team was deployed to supervise the sovereign and expressed concern about her health. Close family members were summoned to Balmoral Palace, the Royal Family’s holiday residence and where Elizabeth was resting for the week.
Elizabeth’s health has already drawn attention in recent months due to her absence from events or adaptations to traditional ceremonies, such as the appointment of the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss. Instead of the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, as is customary, the appointment took place at Balmoral Palace.
Among the family members who have traveled to Scotland are the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, his sons Andrew, Anne and Edward, and his grandson Prince William. Camilla, Charles’ wife, also traveled and canceled an appointment in London in order to visit the monarch. Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, also traveled to Scotland.
Succession of the Throne and Traditional Ceremonies
Decades ago, advisors to the Royal Family left a plan prepared, dubbed London Bridge, with all the steps to be carried out after the Queen’s death.
According to The Guardian, the first to be notified of the death, after Elizabeth II’s family, will be the Monarch’s Private Secretary. After Elizabeth II’s secretary, the Prime Minister will be notified of the monarch’s death, to then notify the 53 Heads of State of the British Community.
After the declaration of the Queen’s death, Charles, who occupies the post of Prince of Wales, will automatically become the new King of England. Without further ado, the future King Charles will need to choose his new name. He has between options Charles III, Phillip, Arthur or George.
On the same night as Elizabeth’s death, Charles is due to give a speech on TV. The schedule predicts that at 11 am the next day he will be proclaimed King by Parliament. Camilla, Prince Charles’ wife, becomes Queen Consort.
According to tradition, England must go into mourning for 12 days. At the end of this period, Elizabeth II will be buried at Windsor Castle.
Despite being proclaimed King , Charles’ coronation could take some time. Although Charles will become King immediately, William will not be Prince of Wales. The title has to be offered to him, in a family tradition since 1301. When Charles offers the principality to William, Kate Middleton will become the new Princess of Wales, as will her mother-in-law Diana.
As king, Charles will need to leave Clarence House and move to Windsor Castle, Home of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom.
From this, the anthem of England will undergo a small change. Instead of “God Save the Queen”, they will sing “God Save the King”. Banknotes and coins with the face of Elizabeth II will go out of circulation and new ones, with the face of Charles, will be produced and distributed.
