Helping to share the web since 1996

Think Your ChatGPT Chats Are Private? Think Again

OpenAI typically does not share ChatGPT users’ conversations with outside parties. However, a data analytics company has reportedly found a method to collect users’ prompts—information that can sometimes include sensitive topics such as sex work, health conditions, and immigration matters.

A New York–based firm named Profound has been marketing access to these collected queries through a product called Prompt Volumes, launched earlier this year. The service enables businesses to see what people are asking major AI chatbots—including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude—with ChatGPT accounting for the majority of the data.

According to the company, the data is anonymized and stripped of identifying details before being licensed to Profound. Still, because users often share more personal information with chatbots than they would in a typical web search, many may not realize that their queries could be included in third-party datasets. Profound’s Prompt Volumes tool allows users to explore a searchable archive, revealing a wide range of real-world topics—covering everything from sexual content and mental health to medical testing and reproductive issues.

In demonstrations of the platform, Profound showcased actual examples of user queries, such as:

  • “How can I hack someone?”

  • “Can you suggest me some incest hentai?”

  • “I caught my wife cheating on me last week and plan to expose her in front of her family.”

  • “Are there any online websites where you can book a brothel?”

  • “What is the significance of the HIV test results I received?”

  • “Which type of sex doll is best for beginners?”

  • “What kind of abortion do you recommend?”

  • “What are the implications of being undocumented in the US after TPS termination?”

Profound’s system can associate these prompts with demographic details such as region, gender, estimated income, and age group. New batches of user prompts are reportedly added every week.
