Exposure to substantial levels of radiation from X-rays or previous cancer treatment is the only known environmental cause of brain tumours. Some brain tumours are caused by inherited diseases that are passed down through the generations. Because brain tumours can put pressure on healthy sections of the brain or spread into those areas, they are harmful. Some brain tumours are malignant or have the potential to become cancerous. They can cause complications if they obstruct the flow of fluid surrounding the brain, resulting in an increase in pressure inside the skull.
