Termites belong to the order Dictyoptera - This also includes cockroaches and mantids. Phylogenetic insect and science studies have shown that termites are more closely related to cockroaches than ants. There are approximately 2,750 species of termites. Termites can be found around the world. They can live in summer drought heat or a cold long winter. The greatest number of termites are in the rainforest (because there are lots of moist wood around, as you can imagine). Termites are often called “white ants” due to their appearance but they are not related to ants at all. These insects play an important role in breaking down dead plant material and enriching soil.
