Key West was first discovered by Ponce de Leon and claimed by Spain in 1513, and the island has over 500 years of modern history. Duval Street is named for Florida’s first territorial governor, William Pope Duval. Key West officially joined the United States in 1822 during Duval’s first year as governor.
