A U.S. government shutdown looms as the House of Representatives voted against a spending bill backed by Donald Trump. Dozens of Republicans broke ranks with the former president by joining Democrats to reject the revised funding proposal. If Congress fails to reach an agreement by midnight on Friday, parts of the federal government will begin shutting down early Saturday morning. House Republican leaders have pledged to resolve the funding impasse before the deadline. Unlike many countries, government shutdowns are relatively common in the U.S., stemming from a 1980 law that prohibits federal spending without an approved budget.
