Other than wet wood, you should check for rotten wood. The rot dry repair shouldn't start without removing the dry rot. Wet wood leads to rupture but rotten wood will prevent adhesive to work. You should use a chisel or cutter to remove dry rot. In case of wood fibers or dirt, you should remove it using sandpaper.
