a river that rises in Pennsylvania and flows north into New York and then back south through Pennsylvania again to join the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh which is the beginning of the Ohio River
Origin
Borrowed from Unami Alikehane, from alike (“to step; he steps”) and -hane (“river”). (Heckewelder alleged that the name was connected to a mythical Allegewi tribe, but this is probably spurious.) The name of the Ohio river, which the Lenape and Iroquois considered to be part of the same single river as the Allegheny, means the same thing in Seneca.
