UK/ˈæɹəˌɹæt/ US/ˈærʌˌrɑt/ uncommon

noun

1.

the mountain peak that Noah''s ark landed on as the waters of the great flood receded

Origin

From Latin Ararat, from Ancient Greek Ἀραράτ (Ararát), from Biblical Hebrew אֲרָרָט (ʾărārāṭ), in Genesis 8:4. Corresponds to Akkadian 𒆳𒌵 (Urarṭu, “Urartu”), the name of a land which in Classical Antiquity became known as 𐎠𐎼𐎷𐎡𐎴 (a-r-mi-i-n /Armina/) (in Behistun inscription, 6th century BC), Ἀρμενία (Armenía) (in Hecataeus of Miletus, ca. 476 BC). The place names in modern Armenia and the given name are from Armenian Արարատ (Ararat).
