Transliteration of Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬚𐬭𐬀 (miθra), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mitrás (literally “(that which) causes binding”), from Proto-Indo-European *mey- (literally “to bind”); cognate with Sanskrit मित्र (mitra, “friend, companion”). Doublet of Mitra.
