Loneliness and Social Isolation increased among Older Women during the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 Pandemic forced all of us to remain imprisoned in our homes. This left many people alone, which severely affected their mental and physical health. During this period, due to social isolation and loneliness, the risk of heart diseases among older women increased by 27%. This claim has been made recently in a research published in the JAMA Network Open Journal.
Scientists say that while post-menopausal women have an 8% risk of heart disease due to social isolation, the risk is 5% because of loneliness. If a woman is affected by both of these conditions, the risk of heart disease increases from 13 to 27%.
Social isolation and loneliness can lead to chronic diseases in older women.
This research has been done by researchers from the University of California San Diego. Study’s lead scientist Natalie Golszewski says that humans are a social animal. The isolation and loneliness we experienced during the corona pandemic can lead to chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important for us to understand the long-term effects of these experiences on the heart.
Difference Between Social Isolation And Loneliness
Most people think of social isolation and loneliness as the same, but there is a big difference between these two conditions. Social isolation means being physically away from people. Example- Not being able to meet your family and friends during Corona. Loneliness is a feeling. It can be felt even in spite of being in touch with and meeting close people. These two conditions can be experienced together as well as separately.
More women than men are victims of loneliness. Earlier research has revealed that women feel more social isolation and loneliness than men. In one such study, 57,825 older women living in the US were asked some questions about social isolation and loneliness in 2011-2012. He was also asked questions on the same subject in 2014-2015. The health of these women was tracked till 2019. Till then 1,599 women had had heart-related ailments.

According to the World Economic Forum, heart diseases are the leading cause of death for women globally. It kills 35% of women worldwide. Every year more than 250 million women are diagnosed with some form of heart disease, out of which 9 million women die.
