Dating App Scams and How to avoid them
Valentine’s week has started and before February 14, Cyber Crimes are also going to increase rapidly. Valentine’s Day is a good opportunity for cybercriminals and scammers to take the help of dating apps to target internet users. Most of the people are using online dating sites like Tinder, Bumble, OKCupid and other dating apps to find love.
Scammers Make Friends with False Identities
Scammers try to entice users on dating apps with false names and photos. After making friends on the app, these scammers talk long and talk about getting into some trouble. In most of the cases, these scammers ask for some amount on credit and promise to return it later. Once the money is transferred, both the scammer and his account disappear.
Taking Advantage of Emotions
Cyber security firm BullGuard has called these romance scammers ‘dead-eyed sharks’. The firm has said that these scammers take advantage of the emotions and goodness of internet users. In such a situation, it is necessary to avoid helping someone after online friendship or before doing so it should be thoroughly tested. It is certainly good to fall in love but after getting caught in such online frauds, you may have to regret it, so be careful.
How to Protect Yourself From Such Scams?
Online romance scammers try to win the trust of the victim, for which they use various methods. They can also do this by sending flowers, gifts and chocolates and sometimes even setting the date of the meeting. While scammers tries to extract all personal information about the victim but reveal very little about themselves. If your online dating partner is doing this, then be alert and take some steps carefully.
Giving Personal Information is a Big Mistake
Giving personal information or transferring money can be overwhelming. After meeting on a dating app, scammers talk about chatting on other platforms and ask for an email or phone number. Do not share your phone number, email address and other social media handles with anyone you trust. Do not share your personal and sensitive details with anyone. Whatever the story is told to you, the guarantee of getting them back when you transfer money online is non-existent.
What is The Right Way of Online Dating?
When you have a match with someone in the dating app, talk to him and take full time. Get to know each other and give more information about yourself only when it is comfortable. This information should not contain your sensitive data (banking details, PIN). After the identity of the person in front is confirmed, his number can be taken or he can be met at a public place. Voice or video calls can be used to determine identity.
