How to motivate your salon staff

As the summer sun starts to make an appearance, it’s likely everyone’s mood is lifted. However, while the warmer weather can add a pep to your step, it can be easy to reach this halfway point in the year and suddenly realise it’s been a while since you last checked in on your salon team.

Making sure your staff are engaged can make a huge difference, both to them and to your business. If your employees are happy, not only to how well they care for your clients, but they’ll be happier in themselves, meaning they’re more likely to stick around rather than looking for another role. This, in turn, means you won’t have to worry about dissatisfied clients and the expensive task of replacing people.

Whether you’re actively trying to give your staff a boost or you’re looking for some long-term strategies to help keep staff motivated, here are some ideas to help you get started.

Company benefits

Company benefits have been in the news a lot after the events of the last two years. From sick pay and annual leave to offers of flexible working, employees are searching for companies that offer benefits that work for them on a real, practical level. This is the case across the board, whether it’s office-based work or, like your industry, customer service-based.

Therefore, it’s worth looking at what your competitors are offering their staff to see if you can match this. It could be that you introduce early and later appointment times to work for both clients who are working the typical 9 to 5 and for your staff members who are juggling the school run. Or you might want to look at your holiday package. Think carefully about what could work for your business and your team.

Rewards and incentives

After days of caring for others, your staff probably don’t often get to enjoy treatments themselves. So, why not change that? Offer your employees one complimentary treatment every month or every quarter, for example, to show how valued they are.

You could rotate the selection each month. For instance, they could choose from treatments using waxing kits or eyebrow shaping and then the next time choose from a massage or fresh nails. This could be a real perk for some.

Involve your staff

While you’re the boss, letting your team in on some of the decision makings can be a real boost for them and a huge help for you. Promote staff where you see fit, but also host regular sessions where the team can put their ideas forward. This should be encouraged as they might well come up with a fresh treatment idea that you’ve not considered.

Train them up

Staff training in any industry is a massive benefit for you and them, but especially so in the beauty industry. You want your team to be highly qualified in the services you offer, as you’re more likely to build a loyal customer base by having the best staff for the job.

Look at your training budget and see where you can make some investments. Also, keep on top of everyone’s training. Being aware of your team’s progress and actively presenting them with opportunities to grow will make them great at their job and also make them want to stick around.
