Microsoft abandons the small Game Streaming Box project

Microsoft decided to abandon the KeyStone project, a small Box that allowed players to play Xbox games in streaming, without the need to have a dedicated console, and all thanks to a simple Internet connection, as revealed by Phil Spencer.

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s games division, said during a podcast that the reason for abandoning this Box has to do with price. In fact, the predicted price was very high compared to Microsoft’s initial wishes, being very close to what is asked for the Xbox Series S. According to him, this was due to “some chip choices we were making at design time”, as well as Phil Spencer’s desire to include a controller.

So what was the price? The structure remains a bit vague, although it suggests a range between $99 and $129. It was the target price, but it was actually more expensive.

He recently made it clear during an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the Keystone project could come back in a few years. But for now, Microsoft prefers to focus on applications available on certain platforms. For example, the group announced a partnership with Samsung so that Samsung TV owners can transmit Xbox games, via streaming, through a specific application directly on the TV without the need for any console.
