Snapchat Introduces ChatGPT-Powered Chatbot to Its App

Snapchat has become the first major social media platform to integrate a ChatGPT-powered chatbot into its app, called “My AI.” Powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-3.5 model, My AI is an “experimental feature” currently available to paying Snapchat Plus subscribers for $3.99 / £3.99 / AU$5.99 a month. Unlike Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which has faced criticism for its ChatGPT-powered chatbot’s unreliable and biased behavior, Snap has implemented measures to prevent My AI from promoting biased, harmful, or incorrect information.

My AI is customizable, allowing users to give it a name and change the wallpaper for their chat sessions. The chatbot is designed to help users organize their social life and boost their Snapchat experience. It can assist with activities such as planning a hiking trip, recommending birthday gifts, suggesting dinner recipes, and even writing a haiku about cheese for a cheddar-obsessed friend.

Snap has acknowledged that My AI is prone to making mistakes and may say something unintended, so users can submit feedback by pressing and holding on any message to improve its behavior. All conversations with My AI will be stored and reviewed to enhance the product experience, raising privacy concerns among users.

While the introduction of chatbots into social media and messaging apps may bring convenience to users, it also raises questions about privacy and the reliability of AI chatbots. With the likes of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok potentially integrating similar technology into their apps, Snapchat’s implementation of My AI may provide a glimpse into the future of chatbots in the social media space.
