Target Brings In-App Shopping to ChatGPT ahead of Black Friday

OpenAI is making a clear push to keep users engaged within the ChatGPT ecosystem—and one of its newest strategies is enabling shopping directly inside the app. Target is the latest major retailer to join the lineup, following Walmart, Etsy, and Shopify, just in time for the busy Black Friday shopping period.
The expansion follows OpenAI’s rollout of third-party apps for ChatGPT, which allow users to connect services such as Booking.com, Spotify, and Zillow. With the addition of Instant Checkout, retailers can even let customers complete purchases without leaving ChatGPT.
According to Target, shoppers can ask ChatGPT to help with tasks like planning “a cozy holiday movie night,” prompting the AI to recommend items such as snacks, blankets, candles, or slippers.
Customers can then add products to their cart and complete the order within ChatGPT using their Target account and saved payment details. Both home delivery and in-store pickup are already supported.
Target notes that this is “only the beginning.” The retailer says it will continue developing the ChatGPT experience over the coming weeks, with upcoming upgrades including Target Circle account integration and same-day delivery.
Target’s ChatGPT shopping features will debut in beta next week—perfectly timed for the Black Friday surge. The retailer already offers a similar AI-powered experience on its own site and app through the Target Gift Finder.
