Leica unveils its first Noctilux M lens in the 35mm focal length

Leica Camera AG has expanded its legendary Noctilux lineup with a milestone release: the Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH., marking the first time the prestigious Noctilux name has been applied to a 35mm M-mount lens.

Since its debut in 1966, the Noctilux designation - derived from Latin words meaning “night” and “light” - has stood for Leica’s fastest and most technically advanced lenses. Known for their ultra-wide apertures and unmistakable visual signature, Noctilux lenses have long pushed the limits of optical engineering. Until now, that heritage was reserved for 50mm and 75mm focal lengths.

The new 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. brings that same philosophy to a more versatile field of view. Despite its compact design, the lens delivers exceptional sharpness and contrast, paired with an expressive rendering style. At wide apertures, the shallow depth of field isolates subjects with precision, producing smooth, creamy bokeh and a strong sense of dimensionality. Stopping down allows photographers to gradually expand depth of field while maintaining clarity across the frame.

A sophisticated optical design - including a floating element - ensures consistent image quality from the minimum focus distance all the way to infinity. This lens is also the first Noctilux model to support close focusing down to 50 cm. When paired with the Leica M EVF 1 electronic viewfinder, photographers can focus comfortably throughout the entire range. On rangefinder-based M cameras, focusing is supported down to 70 cm via the optical viewfinder, with closer distances handled using Live View or the Visoflex system. The extended focusing throw further enhances precision for fine adjustments.

Engineered specifically for modern high-resolution M-camera sensors, the Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH. was entirely developed and handcrafted in Wetzlar, Germany. Its optical formula consists of ten elements arranged in five groups, including three aspherical elements produced using Leica’s Precision Glass Molding (PGM) technology. An integrated lens hood helps suppress flare and reflections, delivering strong contrast and accurate color reproduction even in challenging lighting conditions.

Despite its advanced construction, the lens remains impressively compact - measuring approximately 1.9 inches in length, 2.5 inches in diameter, and weighing just under 15 ounces - making it a practical companion for everyday shooting.

The Leica Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH. will be available globally starting January 29, 2026, through Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorized retailers. The suggested retail price is $9,650.
