Anti-fogging Spray are Dangerous for Health and Environment

These toxic chemicals found on a large scale in anti-fogging spray are dangerous for health

Did you know that the anti-fogging sprays and clothes you use to clean your glasses or face shields can contain a lot of polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS)? These chemicals can make you very sick. This information has come out in a study conducted by scientists from Duke University. This research is published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

In their research, the researchers tested four top-rated anti-fogging sprays sold by Amazon as well as five major anti-fogging garments. Experts found two chemicals, which are Per-Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS), in all nine products, namely fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH) and fluorotelomer ethoxylates (FTEOs).

Of the nine products the scientists examined, two products (Gamer Advantage Fogaway and Optics 55 Fog Gone) were made in the US, while four products (Spalkua, Rotus, Ainid and Nutrition) were made in China, while one product (ECview) was made in China. was from Korea. There is no information available about the country in which the two products (LifeArt and Ricoppa) are made.

Researcher Nicolas Harkert has informed that tests have shown that up to 20.7 mg of PFAS was found per millilitre of spray, which is a very high amount.

According to him, since very limited studies have been done on FTOH and FTEO, so far there is no complete information about the health hazards these chemicals can pose. However, research has shown that once FTOH is inhaled or absorbed through the skin, it can break down in the body to form PFOA or PFAS which can be harmful to health. Not only this, FTEO present in all the four sprays analysed had effects such as toxicity to cells and changes in fat cells during the tests.

PFAS can cause serious harm to the environment as well as health

PFAS are also known as ‘Forever Chemicals’ because of their long lasting exposure to the environment. These toxic chemicals are believed to cause serious harm to health. Even being in contact with them for a long time can lead to cancer.

Some PFAS, especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), can not only damage our immune system, it can also lead to thyroid and cancer, as well as other diseases, according to the researchers. Young children and their mothers can be especially sensitive to these chemicals, which can affect their fertility and development.

In this regard, researcher Heather Stapleton says that the products people are taking in everyday life because they can help keep them safe during this Covid epidemic, but they can pose new dangers to their health. This is really disturbing. The irony, according to him, is that these products are promoted in such a way that they are safe and non-toxic.

According to him, more people than ever before, including doctors and health workers, are using these sprays and clothing to protect their goggles, masks or face shields from fogging. In such a situation, they have every right to know what is in the products they are using.
