Apple May Introduce Major AirPods Updates at WWDC 2025
Apple is reportedly preparing a suite of new features for its AirPods, with several enhancements possibly being unveiled at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9.
According to sources, the next wave of updates could include gesture-based controls, improved sleep detection, camera shutter support, and more. These enhancements may arrive alongside iOS 19 (or iOS 26, depending on naming conventions) and aim to make AirPods even more integrated into Apple’s ecosystem.
One notable feature in development is automatic sleep detection. Sources suggest that AirPods could soon pause audio playback when the user falls asleep. It’s not yet clear whether this functionality would rely solely on the earbuds’ sensors or work in tandem with an Apple Watch, which already includes sleep tracking capabilities.
Another exciting addition could be remote camera control. The report indicates users might be able to take photos on their iPhone or iPad simply by tapping the stem of their AirPods—making hands-free photography even easier.
AirPods’ existing head gesture system, currently available on the AirPods Pro 2 and the upcoming AirPods 4, may also be expanded. At present, users can nod or shake their head to respond to Siri prompts. Soon, these gestures might also control Conversation Awareness—automatically lowering audio when someone nearby speaks and restoring volume once the conversation ends. Currently, this feature requires touch-based interaction.
In addition, Apple is said to be working on a new “studio-quality” microphone mode. This would mirror the Audio Mix options introduced in iOS 16, allowing users to enhance voice clarity by reducing background noise. Users may also be able to switch between voice modes labeled In-frame, Studio, and Cinematic.
Another rumored update involves multi-user support on iPads, where more than one pair of AirPods can be connected simultaneously—an ideal addition for educational environments where iPads are shared among students.
While none of these features have been officially confirmed, Apple’s keynote on June 9 should reveal what’s coming next for AirPods.
