Elon Musk alerts Ukraine!: Use Starlink with caution, Russia can target your network
Elon Musk today cautioned people living in Ukraine to use the Starlink satellite system with caution. They say their commercial Internet network could be targeted by Russians and the entire system could be blocked. He advised users to turn on Starlink only when needed.
Elon Musk wrote in a tweet that, “IMPORTANT WARNING Starlink is the only non-Russian communication system still operating in parts of Ukraine, so the network may have targets. Please use with caution.
SpaceX network more likely to be a target
Musk said, turn on Starlink only when needed and keep the antenna as far away from people as possible. Elon Musk-run SpaceX is said to have sent a truck full of Starlink user terminals to Ukraine in the midst of a Russian attack. Ukraine’s voice PM, Mykhailo Fedorov, tweeted an image showing Starlink terminals in the country.
SpaceX has thousands of Starlink satellites in orbit, which allow the company to beam broadband service around Earth, without the need for fiber-optic cables.
SpaceX Sets Up Over 1,747 Starlink Satellites
Satellites could keep Ukraine online if a Russian attack damages its internet infrastructure. SpaceX has so far set up more than 1,747 Starlink satellites in orbit and the company plans to launch more than 40,000 in total.
