Elon Musk doesn’t want a Tesla with 1000 km Range, and he has a good reason
Tesla’s Elon Musk believes that an electric car with 1000 km of autonomy would be quite feasible, but not necessarily useful. For several years now, the main defect of electric cars has been their autonomy. Internationally, the charging network is still too underdeveloped to drive without having to adapt your route. Between the lack of dedicated stations and their low mileage compared to thermal vehicles, one might think that the subject is of particular concern to Tesla, a great pioneer in the EV market.
Yet Elon Musk surprised his audience on Twitter. A few days ago, while the billionaire called for “more oil and gas”, he also explained why it was technically possible to produce electric cars with a range of 1000 km: “We could have producing 600 mile range (1000 km) Model S’s a year ago, but that wouldn’t have improved the product in my opinion, because 99.9% of the time it would be like carrying a mass of useless battery ”.
Elon Musk prefers to bet on speed and efficiency
A situation that would have inevitably “hampered the acceleration, handling and efficiency” of the car. Especially, recalls Musk, that with 400 miles (645 km) of autonomy, the brand’s vehicles would already cover “more than the needs of most drivers”.
However, the brand plans to make an exception with its Roadster, expected for 2023, the imposing vehicle will have a range of 620 miles, or more than 1000 km. As a direct consequence of this choice, the car will be equipped with an imposing 200 kWh battery pack to go the distance.
