Facebook Gaming will stop working from October 28

Meta closes its Facebook Gaming application

Meta has started notifying its users that its standalone Facebook Gaming app will stop working very soon. In a notification sent by the app, the company announced that the iOS and Android versions of the app will stop working as of October 28.

Meta also offers users the possibility to download their data and reminds them that Facebook Gaming will not disappear permanently. Users will simply need to access the Games tab of the main Facebook application to watch streams from their favorite creators.

The company had deployed this dedicated gaming application in 2020, to better compete with Twitch and YouTube. Meta – which was still Facebook at the time – thought and designed this app to highlight streamers’ content and offer users a chat and other community resources. The Menlo Park company didn’t explain why it decided to shut down the app, but it could be to cut costs and facilitate what Mark Zuckerberg calls “one of the worst downfalls [the company has ever seen] recently.”

Facebook Gaming will stop working on October 28

Last year, streaming tool providers like StreamElements reported that Facebook Gaming only ranked second to Twitch in hours viewed on a game streaming platform. However, analyzing the data from CrowdTangle, Meta’s analytics service, we see that the platform is overrun with spam and pirated content disguised as live video game streams. Meta is working to improve its tools to identify content that breaks the rules so users can enjoy the best experience.
