iPhone 14 might support Satellite Communication

We’ve known for a few months that Apple will allow its next iPhone to send messages via satellite. This information has now been confirmed by a new rumor from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which claims that the iPhone 14 will indeed have the necessary hardware to support satellite communications.

According to his information, Apple has even equipped its iPhone 13 with the necessary components, but has not yet activated the functionality due to lack of agreement with the operators. This seems to match earlier rumors that the iPhone 12, and later models, might use this communication technology. In addition, SpaceX announced that Starlink will soon allow all smartphones to remain connected to the mobile network wherever they are on the planet.

Although the iPhone 14 is theoretically compatible with satellite communication, the analyst warns that the launch of the service depends “on the ability of Apple, and the operators, to agree on a business model”. Ultimately, it’s hard to predict when Apple will actually release the feature, but the analyst adds, “I believe it will eventually happen.”

If Apple fails to reach an agreement with its trading partners, iPhone users will likely have to use other services to communicate with their loved ones via satellite, such as SpaceX.

iPhone 14 will be able to use satellites to make calls?

If a deal is reached, next-generation iPhones are expected to be able to make calls, and send messages, via satellite. In other words, iPhone owners will no longer have to worry about not having a network in the white areas, as it will still be possible to communicate through this new channel.

Ming-Chi Kuo expects another smartphone to be compatible with satellite communications soon: the Huawei Mate 50. The latter should be launched in China on the 6th of September, but we don’t know at the moment if it will be available in the global market.
