Microsoft is also enhancing Notepad’s AI features. The Write, Rewrite, and Summarize tools will now generate results in real time instead of producing them all at once after processing - though full functionality is currently limited to Copilot+ devices.
Since WordPad was officially removed from Windows 11 last year, Notepad has gradually been evolving to fill the space between a simple text editor and Microsoft Word’s more advanced toolset. Over the past few updates, it has gained tabs, autosave, and AI-driven features.
The newest version - currently rolling out to Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels - adds table creation using toolbar icons or Markdown formatting. Users can insert tables of various sizes, as well as add or delete rows and columns either through right-click options or directly via Markdown commands.
AI interactions should also feel smoother thanks to streaming output. However, Microsoft notes that some features require a signed-in Microsoft account and available Copilot credits. Summarizing and writing responses can be streamed by all users, but streaming for the Rewrite tool only works on Copilot+ PCs equipped with a supported NPU.
Microsoft is collecting feedback on these updates. Anyone using the Canary or Dev builds can share their thoughts through the Feedback Hub by pressing Windows key + F.
Early reactions have been divided. Some users appreciate gaining more capability - especially with WordPad gone - while others feel Notepad is drifting away from its original simplicity. Still, with more third-party note apps growing in popularity, these changes appear to be part of Microsoft’s effort to keep Notepad modern and competitive.
