Microsoft Hints at PlayStation 6 Release Date

Amidst the buzz surrounding the next generation of gaming consoles, Microsoft has hinted at the potential release date of the PlayStation 6. According to court documents consulted in the case against the FTC over the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft has mentioned a launch window of 2028 for the PlayStation 6 and the new Xbox, which is scheduled to take place five years from now.

Microsoft’s discussion of a ten-year commitment to Sony in bringing Call of Duty games to the PlayStation platform, if the acquisition is finalized, sheds light on the anticipated timeline. The company stated that the duration of their agreement would extend beyond the planned release period of the next console generation in 2028. As a result, Call of Duty titles would be available on any subsequent PlayStation consoles released during the contractual term, ensuring parity with Xbox.

This projection from Microsoft aligns with Sony’s own disclosure from a November 2022 document, where they indicated that the PlayStation 6 would likely debut no earlier than 2027. Therefore, it appears that both companies are in agreement regarding the prospective timeline.

If the PlayStation 6 and the new Xbox do indeed launch in 2028, it would signify an eight-year lifecycle for the current console generation. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One had a seven-year run before the arrival of their successors, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, in November 2020.
