Microsoft places usage limits on Bing chat

After some issues recently manifested by Bing AI, in particular annoying and potentially aggressive behavior, Microsoft has decided to limit AI chat to prevent the ChatGPT-based chatbot from degenerating.

In a blog post, the Bing team said the company’s data showed that the vast majority of people find the answers they’re looking for within 5 shifts, and that only about 1% of chat conversations have more than 50 messages.

If users reach the limit of five per session, Bing will prompt them to start a new topic to avoid long sessions that could confuse the chatbot and thus make it unviable. Microsoft is still working to improve Bing’s chat capability and it’s unclear how long those limits will last, however the company said it will evaluate feedback received before expanding it again.

It’s worth noting that earlier this week, Microsoft said it doesn’t anticipate people using its chatbot for social entertainment purposes or as a more general means of world discovery.
