Microsoft to Retire Outlook Lite App by October 2025

Microsoft is continuing its cleanup of smaller services, following the shutdown of apps like Lens and the Editor extension for Chrome and Edge. The next service to go is Outlook Lite, the company’s lightweight email app for Android.
Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was designed as a streamlined alternative to the main Outlook app, giving users faster access to email without consuming too much storage, data, or battery life. However, Microsoft has confirmed that the app will officially be deprecated on October 6, 2025.
In the U.S., Outlook Lite has already disappeared from the Google Play Store, and similar removal notices are appearing in other regions, including the U.K. For those who still have the app installed, Microsoft notes it will keep working for a short period after the cutoff date, but full retirement is inevitable.
The company explained the decision in a statement:
“The Outlook Lite app is being retired so we can focus our investments on the Outlook Mobile app, our flagship Android experience, which provides better functionality and user experience. We recommend transitioning to the Outlook Mobile app, where ongoing development and support will continue.”
This marks a shift from just a year ago when Microsoft celebrated Outlook Lite surpassing 10 million downloads and emphasized its commitment to helping users stay connected and productive. The change suggests that Microsoft now wants to consolidate efforts around Outlook Mobile, which integrates more advanced features—including AI tools—that weren’t available in Outlook Lite.
For users, the takeaway is clear: if you’re still relying on Outlook Lite, it’s time to migrate to the full Outlook Mobile app or explore other email alternatives before support ends.
