OpenAI Introduces Codex Pets: A Real-Time AI Agent for Developers

AI companions are steadily becoming a standard feature across the tech landscape, and OpenAI is the latest to embrace the idea with the introduction of Codex Pets. This optional animated companion is built directly into its AI coding tool.

Like most virtual companions, it’s not designed to handle complex tasks. Instead, Codex Pets functions as a floating overlay that provides real-time updates on your project’s status, eliminating the need to jump between tabs. It lets users keep an eye on active threads and see whether Codex is processing, awaiting input, or ready for review - all while staying focused on their current work.

Setting it up is simple. Go to Settings, navigate to Appearance, and select Pets to choose from the available options. Once enabled, you can show or hide the companion by typing /pet in the composer, using the Wake Pet or Tuck Away Pet controls under Settings > Appearance, or pressing Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows.

The feature includes eight built-in designs, such as a cat and a dog, but the standout element is the custom pet generator. Users can prompt Codex to create personalized companions and share them with others online. A glance at the community gallery shows a wide range of creations already in circulation, from pop culture figures to tech personalities and imaginative characters.
