Parler is back on the Google Play Store

Parler: Google allows the controversial social network to return to the Play Store

Parler, the controversial social network, is back on the official Android app store, the Play Store. For those who don’t know, this application had been removed from the store, last January 2021, after the intervention of the Washington Capitol.

Parler had much more flexible moderation policies than other social networks. At the time of removal, it was precisely this policy that the Google Play Store team invoked to justify the removal of the Android application. In the 18 months since that removal, Parler users have had to manually download the Android app, while  Apple fully reinstated the iOS app in May 2021.  Apple’s decision last year was based on ensuring that the social network would detect, and moderate, hate speech.

Today, more than a year after returning to iOS,  Google has given the green light to make Parler readily available again on Android via the Play Store. The social network team claims that this is a new version of the Android application in line with the iOS version.

In a statement, Google recalls that the Play Store policy is to authorize any application that complies with the platform’s rules and guidelines, in particular the obligation to moderate the content:

As we stated a long time ago, apps can appear in the Google Play as long as they comply with Google Play’s development policies.

All Google Play apps that offer user-generated content (UGC) must implement strict moderation practices that prohibit objectionable content, provide an internal system to report objectionable UGC, take action against this UGC as appropriate, and remove or block abusive users who violate the Terms of Service and/or the Application Usage Rules.
