Periscope Camera for iPhone Delayed: No Launch Date in Sight

Rumors have been circulating for some time about the future iPhone 15s and, in particular, about the new iPhone 15 Pro Max that could be renamed iPhone 15 Ultra, differentiating the Max model from the Pro model. This differentiation will be accentuated by the technical sheet of the two smartphones. In particular, Apple is expected to offer some exclusive elements for the new iPhone 15 Ultra/Pro Max.
One of these elements will be the periscope camera destined to represent the main novelty of the photographic sector of smartphones. Several rumors have surfaced about the project in the past. However, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst always very well informed about the news that characterizes the world of Apple, sheds some light on this subject.
Several sources, in recent weeks, have confirmed Apple’s desire to limit the presence of the periscope camera only to the iPhone 15 Pro Max which, as pointed out at the beginning, could be called the iPhone 15 Ultra, giving rise to the first name change. of the iPhone range after several years. This choice is linked both to the desire to make the top of the range model even more exclusive, and to issues related to the space that the hardware will require. In a compact model like the iPhone 15 Pro (which should confirm the 6.1-inch screen of the iPhone 14 Pro) there would be no room for such a new sensor.
Ming-Chi Kuo also confirmed the project that Apple has been working on for some time. However, the analyst goes against previous reports by highlighting that the periscope camera will remain exclusive to the top-of-the-range model, but to the iPhone 16 family, which will only debut in the second half of 2024.
Apple’s long-term plans are not yet known (and perhaps yet to be defined), but for the next two iPhone generations, as Kuo points out, the guidelines already seem clear. Ming-Chi Kuo’s information confirms one of the elements that may characterize the future of Apple’s smartphone range. The desire to differentiate the Pro model from the Pro Max/Ultra version may hide a desire to expand the range even further, articulating it on three levels.
Periscope camera only on iPhone 16
According to this theory, therefore, the “basic” models would remain confirmed (which, as with the iPhone 14, will not register annual SoC updates or receive the new chipset with a year of delay). The Pro model would occupy a higher range, with several more elements than the basic versions.
At the top of the range would be the Pro Max/Ultra version which, at least for the next two years, according to Kuo, should exclusively feature the periscope camera as a distinctive element and capable of offering considerable added value as regards the photographic sector.
