Project Cambria: Meta’s VR Headset 

Project Cambria VR headset is one of Meta’s top investment opportunities right now. As the high-end successor to the hugely popular Meta Quest 2 (formerly called Oculus Quest 2), Cambria will come with all-new AR and face-tracking capabilities. While it’s likely still being used for gaming, Meta seems to be targeting it towards more business and line-of-business applications instead, a gamble that must pay off  as Meta has been financially having a rough time lately.

Earlier this year Share prices fell after it was revealed that Facebook had seen its daily users drop for the first time. That decline was further impacted by broader economic downturns, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg says could be one of the worst in recent history. In response, Meta has scrapped numerous projects like its rival Apple Watch, shedding jobs and hiring, and focusing its efforts on what it believes are most important opportunities.

 

Alongside Cambria, Meta is also reportedly trying to improve Reels’ TikTok-like short-form video content with the goal of improving discoverability while running ads to increase sales.

Can Project Cambria live up to the hype?

As for its VR endeavors, we’ve yet to see what the Cambria is capable of, but recent spec rumors make it sound like a solid improvement over what the Quest 2 offers. However, it will likely cost a heck of a lot more with many analysts expecting it to be at least $800 (around , or this could be a big swing and a failure for the social media giant. Gamers could come in and help bridge the gap close by taking advantage of the upgraded hardware to play the best VR games out there, but even they might be put off by a price point that’s likely more than double the cost of Quest 2.

With a release date In 2022 on the cards, we probably won’t have to wait long for Meta to properly reveal what his headset is capable of, and then we can all decide whether or not it’s a worthwhile investment.
