Samsung’s Galaxy S24 to Integrate Satellite Connectivity, Following in Apple’s Footsteps

A year ago, Apple introduced a similar satellite connectivity feature with the iPhone 14. This functionality enables users to reach out to emergency services in situations where traditional cellular or WiFi connections are unavailable. For instance, it proves valuable during hiking expeditions, offering a lifeline in case of injuries or unexpected adverse weather conditions. This innovation has already played a crucial role in rescuing individuals from perilous circumstances, such as a family trapped in the recent Maui wildfires.Following Apple’s pioneering move, smartphone manufacturers have collaborated with Google to bring a comparable feature to Android devices. Samsung’s Park Yong confirmed this week that the Galaxy S24 will be equipped with this satellite feature, although specific operational details were not disclosed.
Apple’s Emergency SOS feature prompts users for information about their situation and transmits it to a relay center, from which it is forwarded to emergency services. While Samsung’s implementation may share similarities, the company is also exploring the ability for users to send and receive various types of messages via satellite, extending beyond just emergency services.
In February of this year, Samsung announced the development of modem technology to enable satellite communication.
In addition to technological advancements, Samsung will need to establish partnerships with satellite communication providers to power this feature.
