This research from the University of Washington has shown that due to the property of compression or suppression, the huge ice sheets of areas like Antarctica and Green Land become more dense. Not only this, because of this, their surface also settles several feet below what is expected.

According to the study published in the journal Glaciology last week, where the surface goes down to 11.3 meters in Antarctica, it goes down to 5.8 meters in Greenland. Brad Lipowicz, assistant professor of Earth and Space Science at the university and study author, said it was like finding hidden ice. And we’ve found the chunk of ice that wasn’t joined properly.

In the entire Antarctic ice sheet, the surface sinks by about 0.7 meters, which is an area of additional ice equivalent to about 30,200 gigatons. On average, the surface sheet of Green Land goes down by 0.8 m. In which three thousand gigatons of ice can be contained. In this study, researchers also gave the reason for this.

Researchers say that it cannot be fully blamed on the ice sheet. He is only partially responsible. As the temperature of the glacier starts increasing with depth. Thermal compression causes the cold ice near the surface to condense and become soft or powdery like a swamp.
