Terrace Renovation Tips

If you are the proud owner of a garden, you can probably hardly wait to spend the warmer temperatures outside. A terrace is a good way to enjoy the sunny days outdoors. With your own terrace, YOU create a cozy sofa, a large dining table or an inviting barbecue area. If you are interested in building a terrace, below are  5 tips to ensure a successful implementation.

Material selection

One of the main questions you will face when planning a patio is the choice of material. This step is incredibly important because the material can only be changed afterwards with a great deal of effort. WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) is a composite material made of wood and plastic and is ideally suited for outdoor use. These boards do not require any maintenance, do not splinter and offer an enormous selection of colors and shapes. In summer, however, these heat up a lot, which is not the case with wooden terraces, for example. These are usually also more cost-effective, but more prone to costly care needs. Another alternative would be a stone floor. Stone terrace slabs are extremely durable, easy to care for and available in various versions. The disadvantage here is the higher costs and the need for a professional to lay them. Agree your personal taste with the material and, if necessary, also obtain a second opinion. As a construction company in Vienna, we are also happy to advise you on the selection of materials and general exterior design and terrace renovation if required.

Substructure and slope

The substructure of the terrace forms the basis for stability and durability. When it comes to the construction material, it depends on the upper material chosen. If the terrace covering is to be made of wood, the substructure is also built with the same type of wood. Aluminum is also often used for the substructure, as it is extremely hard-wearing and works well in combination with WPC boards. A well-considered construction ventilates the terrace and significantly reduces the likelihood of waterlogging. A deliberately stimulated slope of the terraces also helps that the rainwater can drain off well and that no increased moisture remains. SHOULD get expert help from a builder here to ensure proper material selection and careful construction.

Water and electricity

Another important point when planning a patio is the idea of water and electricity supply. If you already include possible water connections or power sources when building the terrace, you will save yourself time-consuming rework. Connections for irrigation systems or the garden hose are not only useful for watering the plants or moistening, but also offer quick cooling on warm, sunny days. In the evening, soft light sources on the terrace ensure brightness and a romantic atmosphere. Note that the possible uses of power lines, lamps or light strips should be used.

Terrace roofing

Sun protection is not only beneficial for you, your terrace will thank you too. The sensitive material is better protected from sun, rain and snow, which significantly minimizes and prevents the need for cleaning. YOU can make roofing just as individually according to your ideas as the floor area. If you opt for a permanent roof, YOU make use of it all year round, but when you have to reckon with less flexibility. If you also want to let the sun shine on your terrace from time to time, awnings or sun sails are a good option. A classic parasol can also provide a remedy without great planning or installation effort. This also protects against solar radiation and, in the case of large versions, can also be firmly anchored in the ground. If YOU want to use a roof that requires installation, think about possible additional measures when building the terrace.

Privacy screen

To create a place of closure in the open air, a privacy screen is a good option. A wall made of wood or stone can provide a cozy atmosphere and stylish protection. Hedges or other green plantings also create a partition for more privacy. There are ways to create a place of retreat without losing too many sense of aesthetics. The combination of different floor materials with light fences or robust wall elements can create a unique appearance. Design your private feel-good zone with a seating area or a comfortable sofa, depending on your personal preferences
