USB4 Version 2.0 Officially Announced: Understand What It Means
Instead of simplifying, the truth is that the USB standard is getting more and more confusing. As of today, there is a new version, called USB4 Version 2.0 and it extends the standards of the current USB4. According to the USB Promoter Group, this is a major upgrade that allows for data performance of up to 80 Gbps over the USB Type-C cable and connector.
The USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specifications have also been updated to enable this higher level of data performance. But here are the main features of the USB4 Version 2.0 solution:
- Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new architecture, using existing 40 Gbps passive USB
- Type-C cables and newly defined 80 Gbps active USB Type-C cables.
- Data updates and display logs to better utilize the highest available bandwidth.
- USB data architecture updates now allow encapsulation of USB 3.2 data at more than 20 Gbps.
- Latest versions of DisplayPort and PCIe specifications updated
- Backwards compatibility with USB4 version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.
USB4 Version 2.0 promises high-speed transfers
This update is currently targeted specifically at developers. According to the USB Promoter Group, the branding and marketing guidelines will be updated in the future to include USB 80 Gbps in the labeling of certified products and certified cables.
