A brief conversation between Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s video game branch, and NASBurg at Xbox Live allowed us to establish a timeline for one of the most requested features for Xbox Cloud Gaming: the ability to play your own games. โIt should be this year,โ said Phil Spencer, without giving further details.
While there is already a large selection of games available on Xbox Cloud Gaming, the ability to get a wider variety of games would undoubtedly give the service a boost. According to the latest data published a few days ago, Xbox Game Pass (which includes cloud gaming on different devices) currently has 34 million subscribers. In comparison, there were 25 million in January 2022, representing growth of 36% in 2 years.
Microsoft likely has a lot of legal work to do to get the right licenses to deliver on its original promise. When the Xbox team gave its last official update on this topic two years ago, it said that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members would only be able to stream โcertain games they already ownโ on Xbox Cloud Gaming.
