First standardised by Dieter Doepfer in 1996, his decision to make the specification freely available and free to use helped create the dizying array of innovative brands and modules that we see today.

A drum voice is a module that has all the elements needed to create a drum sound, for example a kick or snare, and does not require any further modules.
