Tips for Choosing the Best Plant Pots for your Garden
When choosing the right plant container, it’s not just the look and size that count, but above all the material. This is the only way to get something out of your plant pots for a long time.
For many people, an attractively designed garden is both a hobby and a place to relax. Here you can relax in the fresh air, have meals and enjoy mild summer evenings with friends. It is all the more important that the outdoor area is designed as attractively as possible. The planting plays a decisive role here: green plants, flowering plants, herbs and more contribute to a high feel-good factor. Garden owners cannot avoid choosing the right plant container: There are, however, a few important points to consider.
Which material is best for outdoor use?
Plant containers that are to be placed in the garden must meet a number of requirements. This includes, for example, weather resistance: Pots and tubs that are exposed to the elements should be as waterproof, weather-resistant and insensitive to UV radiation as possible. If you plan to leave weatherproof plants outside over the winter months, it is also advisable to pay attention to frost resistance. Plant pots made of clay or terracotta or plastic are most commonly used for outdoor use.
- Plastic Planters
Plastic has the advantage that it has a very low deadweight and the plants can be moved around without much effort if necessary. In addition, plastic is unbreakable and crack-resistant and very resistant to cold. On the other hand, direct sunlight poses a risk to plastic, because both the optics and the functionality are impaired by UV light.
- Terracotta Planters
Terracotta and clay pots, on the other hand, are popular with many gardeners because of their natural look, as well as being environmentally friendly and durable. UV radiation can hardly harm this material – but they are sensitive to frost and cold. In winter, planters made of these materials are therefore better off indoors, such as in the garage or conservatory.
- Planter Made Of Fiberglass-Stone Mixture
Plant containers made of a fiberglass stone mixture are usually weather and frost resistant. The tubs can remain outdoors all year round, which saves you a lot of work as a hobby gardener. From my point of view, planters made of these materials are the best choice, especially since these planters with their different shapes and sizes fit into almost any garden concept.
Choosing the right size for the plant container: this is how it works!
With the right care and the right light, soil and water conditions, plants will continue to grow. This not only applies to the visible area such as leaves, stems or flowers, but also to a certain extent to the roots that are in the ground. For healthy plant growth and thus also for beautiful and attractive plants, it is therefore important that the flower pot or tub is the right size. Containers that are too small mean that the plant cannot develop properly and, in the worst case, die.
The following rule of thumb applies to the correct container size: The pot or bucket should be about 10 to 15 cm larger than the root ball.
On this basis, it is also possible to calculate how many plants fit in a container, because, especially in the garden, it is often not just one plant per container. Nevertheless, it can happen that young plants in particular have to be repotted after some time. When moving to a larger pot, there should be an increase in space of about two to three centimeters so that the plant can develop accordingly.
As far as the shape of the plant container is concerned, there are hardly any limits to the gardener’s imagination: It doesn’t matter whether it’s round, rectangular, oval or square; the plants simply don’t care what shape they grow in, as long as the size fits.
