Ten Tips to Positively Increase your Influence

Ten tips to increase your influence in a positive way

Having influence is important, especially if you are an entrepreneur. Here are ten tips to increase your influence in a very positive way.

Influencing and being an influencer are two different things. If you’re an entrepreneur, influencing is having a positive effect on other people’s goals, actions, and mindsets. In other words, influence is about improving the experiences of employees, customers, friends and family members.

Here are ten proven tips to increase that kind of influence.

1) Be at the service of the other, rather than selling them a product. Successful entrepreneurs serve, unsuccessful ones sell. Whenever you interact with someone, your intention should be to help them, even if they never buy your product or offer. This approach, practiced consistently, produces much better results than any short-term transactional tactic.

2) Share one message at a time. It is a mistake to try to get someone to do two different things simultaneously. Pick a priority and stick to that message.

3) Don’t brag. Did you win a prize? Ask a close friend or colleague to share the news. Avoid seeing yourself as a guru, thought leader, or visionary. The more you brag, the harder it is for others to identify with you.

4) Ask good questions. Nobody likes know-it-alls. Instead of sharing your wisdom, listen carefully to others and ask one or more questions that challenge them to solve their problems.

5) Being human, not perfect. American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has 73 World Cup victories in six disciplines. It is however known from the disappointing Olympic Games. However, that doesn’t make it any less endearing. In the long run, her 2022 Olympic experience will likely improve the quality of her life, if she embraces it and shares what she’s been through. Share your disappointments and successes.

6) Start with a catchphrase. People are busy. Before you can add value to their life, you need to capture their attention. Whether you walk into your child’s room or a meeting room, always avoid with a catchphrase that encourages others to engage with you.

7) Come up with good ideas. Whenever you come up with a good idea, think about how you can share it so others can benefit from it (see tip 1).

8) Show others off. “You shall not brag” will be your mantra. If you want others to be willing to help you and share your good news, then help them do the same. Never miss an opportunity to highlight the people you trust, respect and appreciate.

9) Broaden your champion’s expertise. Companies find success by developing expertise in a specific area. However, the world is constantly changing. If you rest on your laurels for too long, you risk losing your influence. Adopt a growth mindset and find ways to become an expert in related fields.

10) Be clear and sincere. Keep it simple and sincere. Don’t procrastinate. Be a man or woman of your word.
