UN Report claims – By 2030 the World will face 560 disasters every Year
Due to climate change, the number of terrible natural disasters on the earth is increasing. The United Nations (UN) has made this claim in a recent report. According to the researchers, if the current trend continues, then by 2030, the world may have to face about 560 disasters every year. At present, the whole world is facing 400 disasters every year since 2015.
This report by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) also states that between 1970 and 2000, the annual number of disasters was 90-100. This is a figure for medium to large scale disasters.
By 2030 the world will be hit by heat and drought
The UN report also forecasts a 30% increase in drought cases by 2030.
According to the report, warm air will increase by 3 times in 2030 as compared to 2001. Along with this, 30% increase has also been estimated in the cases of drought.
Researchers involved in the research say that due to climate change, not only natural disasters, but also the pandemic, economic crisis and food shortage are increasing. Not knowing how many such disasters were behind climate change, but humans did not know about this.
According to UNDRR chief Mami Mizutori, people have no idea how much they have suffered due to natural disasters. “If we don’t take action today, it will be extremely difficult to recover this loss. It’s a vicious cycle,” says Mizutori.
The condition of poor countries will get worse
Marcus Einckel of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, who was involved in the research, says that people living in poor countries will be most affected by the terrible disasters in the future. These countries will not be able to raise the amount of money needed to recover from disasters. This will put a burden on the economy.
US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist Roger Pulvarty says that the weakening of the immune system due to diseases, wildfires accompanied by hot winds and the lack of food and fuel due to the war in Ukraine are also disasters. Because of these many countries can come to the brink of ruin.
Being prepared is the only way to escape
Pulvarti says that although there was a decline in deaths due to disasters for many years, but in the last 5 years this figure seems to be increasing. According to Mizutori, the Pandemic is also a big reason behind this. However, he believes that proper planning is needed to prevent a hurricane or earthquake from turning into a major disaster. This will save us from a lot of losses.
According to Pulvarti, if the society does not change its way of thinking quickly and is not prepared in advance for future disasters, then the deaths due to these will not take the name of stopping.
