Scientist creates Smart Fabric that detects Sound
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scientist Wei Yan has designed a new type of fabric, which acts as a mic and speaker. It easily captures the words coming out of the mouth, the chirping of birds and the sounds of flying leaves.
According to this research published in the journal Nature, these sound-hearing fibers are woven into a cloth. When a person wears this cloth, then these fibers detect sound. It can also listen to the heartbeat of the person wearing the cloth.
How does Fabric work?
When a person wears this cloth, then these fibers detect sound.
Researcher Yan says that there is a connection between clothes and voice for centuries. Till now we have been trying to modify our voice with the help of cloth, but using cloth instead of mic is a unique concept. Yan now works at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
According to Yan, this cloth is made from a material called Twaran and cotton. The combination of these threads converts the sound energy into vibrations. Along with this, a special fiber has also been used in the cloth. It is made of piezoelectric materials. When such material is pressed or twisted, voltage is produced. After this these signals are recorded and read through a device.
Fabric distinguishes between silence and noise
According to research, this fabric senses the difference between a quiet library and traffic noise.
Acting like a mic, this fabric is capable of capturing sound of many ranges and levels. According to research, it understands the difference between a quiet library and traffic noise. At present, researchers are developing a computer device that can easily capture the noise in the background.
Experiment with shirt in research
Yogendra Mishra, a scientist involved in the research, told that he used a shirt to prove his concept. Scientists listened to the heartbeat of a human by weaving special fibers into the shirt. Mishra says that this shirt can easily monitor the heart rate of a person. Not only this, the sound of closing of heart valves can also be heard through this shirt.
Wearing like normal clothes
Research found that even after 10 washes, the fabric caught the same sounds as before.
Yan says that wearing special fibers in clothes gives a feel of normal fabric. Research found that even after 10 washes, the fabric caught the same sounds as before. That is, this cloth can become trendy as well as being comfortable.
New fabric will work in diseases
Scientists say that clothes made from this fabric will be useful for early detection of many diseases like heart disease. Also, for those who have trouble hearing, with the help of this fabric, the sound can be amplified. Let us tell you that this fabric can also work as a speaker through a device.
