Elon Musk’s Humanoid Robot scheduled to launch on September 30th
Tesla will unveil its first humanoid robot with artificial intelligence during the Tesla AI Day scheduled for September 30th. Speaking during the Qatar Economic Forum, the world’s richest man confirmed his tweet from early June where he announced the postponement of the event due to the possibility of a Functional Optimus prototype. The Tesla boss praised his very talented team and said he believed the first working prototype would be ready in time for late September. Optimus is about 1.73 meters tall and weighs 56.7 kg. The robot can move at a speed of 8 km/h, lift 68 kg and carry 20 kg.
The robot would contain an AI similar to the autopilot of cars, with cameras in the head, a computer placed in the torso containing neural networks, and a screen in place of the face. It would be intended to operate primarily in the factory to carry out physical work, as well as at home where it could develop a unique personality to match that of the owner.
The Tesla AI Day would above all serve to show that the firm is not just about manufacturing cars and that it would be a pioneer in AI, according to Elon Musk. The event could hold some surprises as he said there would also be “other exciting things”.
Tesla is reportedly developing a prototype AI-powered humanoid robot capable enough to replace humans in most of the toughest physical jobs. It could be unveiled next year according to the optimistic timeline announced by Elon Musk. Electric cars with Tesla, space missions with SpaceX, internet for all via a vast constellation of satellites, and now humanoid robots replacing humans in the most difficult physical tasks. The development of a robot prototype is Elon Musk’s intention and he addressed this topic precisely in a day dedicated to AI at Tesla (Tesla AI Day).
According to Elon Musk, the humanoid robot should make it possible to replace physical labor, so it’s really just a choice. With this system it would be possible for him to generate a universal basic income. He admits that it’s not for tomorrow because the capabilities of robots are still far from those of human tasks. At the moment they are ready for basic tasks in simple environments or at home. But with advances in AI, that could change. Will the Tesla boss be able to master this project like he has done in his other favorite fields? No doubt about it, but perhaps not on the optimistic timeline he’s set for himself. For example, the manufacturer is still struggling with the massive use of its autonomous driving mode for the Tesla. Its system is also the subject of a safety investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration due to its involvement in several traffic accidents.
