Nothing Phone (1): Price and Specifications

Nothing Phone (1), a mobile innovated in the United Kingdom, designed in Sweden and which therefore represents Europe’s return to a business currently dominated by the big Asian firms.

An intelligent campaign, in fact, has managed to create an expectation that we were no longer used to, with a waiting list of more than 200,000 reservations.

Nothing Phone (1) is in fact an aesthetic revolution, a totally new design that arises as a result of a struggle of years between the design team and the limits imposed by the engineers.

With more than 530,000 units sold, the Ear (1) transparent wireless headphones, the firm’s first product, were proof that users were hungry for something new. And the Nothing Phone (1) is the one that now, finally proves it.

Glyph: a backside that ‘talks’ The first thing that catches your eye on the phone is its transparent back, which allows you to see the ‘guts’ of the phone, with more than 400 components. But those guts do not consist of a lot of plates, capacitors and printed circuits, which would be normal, but their distribution and placement are different from those of any other mobile. The wireless charging coil, for example, as well as the battery and other components, are not in the usual place. Antennas, speakers and processors have also been mounted differently. Everything is carefully studied to facilitate communication with the user.

The screen is 6.55 inches and HDR10 +, is a flexible OLED (not supplied by Samsung), with an adaptive refresh rate between 60 and 120 Hz and protected by double-sided Gorilla Glass 5. The color depth is 10 bits and the resolution is 2400 x 1080 pixels (402 pixels per inch). The touch response rate is 240 Hz. Under the screen, we find the fingerprint sensor to identify the user. only two cameras As for cameras, and unlike what all competing companies already offer, we only find two on the back, a main sensor and a wide angle with a field of view of 114º, both 50 megapixels.

The main camera, with a Sony IMX 766 sensor, has a double image stabilizer (OIS and EIS) and functions such as Night Mode, night video, slow motion (at 120 fps), Bokeh effect, etc. The wide angle, with Samsung’s JN1 sensor, also allows you to take macro photos. The front camera, meanwhile, located under a hole in the screen, is 16 megapixels and incorporates a Sony IMX 471 sensor. It also includes Night Mode and can record videos in 1080p quality at 30 frames per second. Thanks to these weapons, with the rear cameras we can record live 4K and HDR video.

An AI system is responsible for perfecting the shots (both photo and video) on the fly. In the same recording, something interesting, it is possible to pause a video and continue recording the same video later.

According to Nothing, better quality does not mean more cameras. We will have to wait for the tests to check if the quality in photography is up to a phone as special as this wants to be.

Processor: A series 7?

The chosen processor is going to give a lot to talk about. In fact, it’s not the latest Snapdragon Gen 1 that the rest of the brands are bragging about, and it’s not even one of Qualcomm’s earlier 8-series. The chosen chip, perhaps in order not to shoot up the final price of the phone, is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 G+, which allows up to 12 GB of Ram, 256 GB of storage and 5G connectivity.

According to Nothing, the processor has been optimized by Qualcomm especially for this terminal. The firm asked for fluidity, speed, battery life and camera functions. And that is, as Nothing explains, what Qualcomm has given them. Once again, we will have to wait for the tests to see if the performance is up to par.

As for the battery, it is 4,500 milliamps and comes with a 33W fast charging system, which can be charged to 50% in 30 minutes. It has a 15W wireless charging system and 5W reverse charging. The charger, for price reasons, is not included in the box. Some capabilities that, truth be told, are well below what the rest of the brands offer. The terminal is equipped with two stereo speakers and is IP53 certified, resistant to splashes (not submersible) and dust. In the software section, the experience will be similar to that of the first One Plus. Pure Android, without pre-installed applications and a layer, Nothing OS, which allows you to customize many features of the terminal.

A unique detail is the presence on the home screen of an ‘NFT Gallery’ where users can directly access their NFT collections and track prices. The new Nothing Phone (1) will be available from July 21 in two colors: black and white. Prices start at 469 euros for the 8GB/128GB configuration. If we prefer 256 GB for storage, the price will be 499 euros, and if we choose to have 12GB/256GB, it will go up to 549 euros.
