EU wants Manufacturers to provide 5 years of updates for all Smartphones

European Union wants to force manufacturers to provide 5 years of updates for smartphones

The European Union has made some efforts to avoid the waste of consumer electronic devices for a long time. To this end, it passed a law that obliges all equipment that needs charging to use a USB-C port for this purpose, and more recently there has been talk of the obligation for them to have replacement parts available for smartphones, at least for a year. .

Now, to believe what is being said by ARSTechnica, European Union regulators are preparing to force smartphone manufacturers to offer 5 years of updates for their smartphones. As is being revealed, the idea is to force 3 major updates to the operating system and 5 years of security updates.

If this law is passed, it could significantly change the way Android smartphone OEMs handle software support for their devices. Apart from Samsung and Google, no other brand promises five years of security updates for their devices. Even so, not all your devices enjoy these benefits. Samsung, for example, also promises four major Android updates, but only for its flagships. By comparison, Google, and other brands, provide three or fewer major updates for select devices.

A regulation like this could force companies to release longer updates not just for the high-end, but also for the mid-range and entry-level devices, which generally don’t receive long-term update commitments.

For now, we can only wait to see if this rule will go ahead or not.
