Google promises a new version of Wear OS every year

Google’s operating system Wear OS is now on several new devices, including Google’s own Pixel Watch, and the search giant reveals that it will release a new version every year.

However it’s unclear whether this yearly refresh target refers, for example, to 3.0 -> 4.0 or if 3.0 -> 3.5 would count, which happened this year on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 Pixel Watch.

This annual release cadence was born out of a desire to ensure the latest Android features for smartwatches are integrated quickly. For now, Björn Kilburn is referring to the quarterly updates of that operating system to bring new experiences throughout the year. This could refer to the features the Pixel Watch gets or the seasonal Android equivalents.

For watch owners running Wear OS 2, Google reaffirms that the update to version 3 for devices with Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100+ chips is still expected this year.

A device reset will be required. Finally, Google says it’s “absolutely committed” to Wear OS. Looking ahead, the team is working to improve battery life to allow for smaller devices.
