“Official” Badge is back on Twitter

Twitter announced that it has returned the “Official” seal assigned to certain accounts. The funniest thing is that this happens just a few days after it ended up forcing users to a new subscription option that costs $8 a month… just so you have your account certified on the social network.

The move follows a proliferation of fake accounts on the platform after new CEO Elon Musk asked users to pay $8/month to get the blue checkmark to authenticate accounts. This option was previously only available for verified accounts, politicians, celebrities and other personalities.

Fake accounts from several major brands appeared on the social network Twitter, accompanied by a blue “tick”, including accounts impersonating Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX, as well as Eli Lilly, Nestlé, Lockheed Martin or Nintendo.

“To combat identity theft, we’ve added an ‘Official’ badge to certain accounts,” tweeted the Twitter support account, which reverts to the “Official” badge.

Elon Musk wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that he had “killed” the new option just hours after deploying it.

Several users have also noticed that the option to sign up for Twitter Blue, the $8/month subscription service that comes with blue badge verification, has disappeared. It is temporarily unavailable and it is unclear when it will return… if it will.
