China forces Apple to modify AirDrop

Since its launch in 2011, the AirDrop function has made it very easy to transfer any document between iPhone, iPad and Mac. Three settings are available: user can not allow AirDrop sharing, only allow contacts or allow everyone without exception. This last option will change over the next year.
Apple will make a change to the “all” setting, which will be limited to ten minutes. iOS 16.1.1, which has been available for a few days now, added this option for users in that country. Apple said the tweak will roll out globally next year to reduce unwanted file sharing.
Since its inception, AirDrop has been used, at best, to make jokes and, at worst, to harass users and especially iPhone users on public transport: many of them complain of being “shot in the dick”. ” and other unwanted photos. However, this has never bothered Apple… until now. The manufacturer has made few changes to its technology in recent years, so why now?
It is rumored to have been imposed by Chinese authorities after protesters shared anti-government material using AirDrop. These changes should reduce these exchanges, even if the ten-minute window is quite wide (could Beijing ask for an even shorter time?).
