Future of Google Maps

Navigation tools are increasingly immersive. On Google Maps, users will have access to an increasing amount of information: is a store open or closed? Is there seating outside? What is the weather like there?
Christopher Phillips, Director of Navigation Tools at Google, lifts the lid on the future of Google Maps in an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal.
What future holds for Google Maps?
According to him, the future of Google Maps requires a much more realistic vision of the real world. In a few years, our application will be able to give you all the necessary information about the place of your choice. While navigation tools have already gone far beyond just giving directions, more big changes are on the way including weather updates.
Google Maps, a platform owned by Alphabet, is the fourth most popular mobile app in the United States in terms of unique visitors aged 18 and older. It is therefore more popular than TikTok or Instagram, as well as its closest direct competitor, Apple Maps.
The smartphone will remain a very important device with some very emerging technologies that would make it easier to integrate navigation information, It relies on the combination of visual, sound and augmented reality cues. Google Maps has also enriched its app with accessibility information, such as if a user wants to get to a place with a wheelchair. These are details that did not exist in historical map products and now help people make more informed choices about where to go and how to get there.
